Best Paying Careers – Making Your Next Move Count

By Tony Jacowski

The US government’s list of America’s best and worst paying jobs has come out, and it’s the men and the women with the stethoscopes around their necks that are at the top of the list. The worst paying jobs, by the way, belong to those in the heat of the kitchen in America’s fast food industry. If you are looking to make a career change, it can’t hurt to know which jobs pay the most, even if some of those might be out of your education range. These lists, although they are very specific, can give you a general idea of which industries are trending up or down when it comes to salaries.

The top paying career in the 2009 survey goes to surgeons whose annual salary averages just over 206,000 dollars per year. This sounds great until you consider that most are in school until the age of thirty, and graduate with hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loan debt. Second on the list are anesthesiologists at just fewer than 200,000 dollars, followed by orthodontists with an average salary of 194,000 per year. This is an interesting trend that we have seen in several industries. Even when times are tough, there are certain things, and usually they fall into the category of looks, that people almost refuse to give up. Having a bright, white, straight smile appears to be one of those things.

Fourth on the list of America’s best paying jobs are obstetricians and gynecologists, making about 193,000 dollars per year. And, rounding out the top five are oral and maxillofacial surgeons. All five have bucked the economic trends, as they are either a necessity or low on the list of things to cut in a family’s budget. Too late for you to make a career change that requires five to ten years of education? This might be a good opportunity to steer your children in the right direction.

So, just who makes up the list of America’s worst paying jobs? That category belongs to people who no doubt work very hard for a living but are paid at the bottom of the wage scale, making these careers not the best of choices. On the top of the list are people in the food preparation business at 17,000 a year, followed by fast food cooks, dish washers, cafeteria attendance, and shampooers. Don’t let these numbers get you down, as obviously most of the jobs in America fall somewhere in between this wide gap. The average annual salary in the United States increased almost four percent to about 42,000 dollars per year. Out of all fifty states, the District of Columbia had by far the highest salary average, at almost 68,000 dollars.
